MIS Administrator Message

The School was established in 1993 as the Melaka Government needed an international school for expatriate families who migrate to Melaka as Malaysia as my Second Home or for employment and business purpose.

Pupils come from many parts of the World and a wide diversity of backgrounds.

The school is proud of its fine academic tradition. Year by year its success rate, in terms of public examination results and entry into highere ducation, is amongst the best in the country and the range of careers followed by former pupils is constantly expanding.

Success is not however measured solely in terms of examination achievement. Cultural, spiritual, creative, aesthetic awareness and sustainable living are nurtured and opportunities abound for the development of special talents in music, drama, dance, and other pursuits. Stress is placed on the need for individual responsibility and self-discipline within the school and wider community.

Melaka International School takes the first step to take action on 2 important issues threatening mankind.

1. Global warming
2. Toxins and Health.

After years of debate, consensus among most of the world’s scientists holds that we are warming the planet. Unless we take steps now to curb global warming, our way of life, our planet, and our children are all in grave danger. There is hope. Each of us can make simple decisions that will reduce global warming and pollutions.

Health problems on the rise among young children. Most of the chronic diseases in children and adults are due to chemical toxins used in our food industry. Right from the growing of food and in the preparation, using artificial fertilizers, insecticides, pesticides and usage of unhealthy methods of food preparation is the main cause of chronic diseases.

When we built the school, we felt it our duty to be able to inculcate good habits and to teach the children on these issues.

Our school was built with this in mind. We introduced spacious class rooms to cut down on the dependence of Air conditioners, using natural lighting to reduce using electricity, and installed Solar energy to introduce sustainable energy source.

Rain water collection pond was also built to introduce water recycling. A 2 acre farm was developed next to the main building to introduce the children to organic farming, recycling of organic waste and other farming activities.

The children are encouraged to have their own plot of land to learn, soil preparation, worm culture, preparation of organic fertilizers, germination, planting and harvesting.

These vegetables grown by the students are served in the canteen. We do not serve any junk food in our canteen.

Also, MIS believes in overall development of a student. Instead of concentrating on academic excellence alone, we have introduced facilities for various games, like football, basketball, athletics, volley ball, badminton, table tennis etc.
In addition we have a dance studio to introduce fine arts and also a theatre to teach acting.

In addition, we also bring in students and teachers from other schools on weekends to teach them on organic farming and give lectures on global warming issues and what role they can play.
Example:
1. Support of clean, renewable energy.
2. Buy local and organic
3. Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy saving bulbs
4. Saving energy at home is good for the environment and for the wallet.
5. How to become a smart water consumer.
6. How to buy energy-efficient electronics and appliances.
7. Plant a tree, protect the forest.
8. Reduce! Reuse! Recycle!

We hope other schools will introduce organic farming and usage of renewable energy sources in the co curricular syllabus, as this is an important issue for saving the world from natural disasters.
